Catholic schools in Australia educate one in five Australian children. This is one of the primary ways in which the Catholic Church seeks to play a constructive role in the Australian community. The Church’s mission is to provide the best education possible to every child who attends a Catholic school: regardless of whether the student is in a secondary college in Alice Springs or a primary school in Zetland in metropolitan Sydney.
The challenge in providing equal opportunity to all can be accentuated in regional and rural areas; and more so for our remote communities. The town of Wadeye has a population of 2500 and is located 400 km South West of Darwin.
The Kardu Diminin people are the traditional owners of the Wadeye country. There are 22 other clans from the surrounding Thamarrurr region residing in Wadeye and attending Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Thamarrurr (OLSHT) Catholic College.
OLSHT is a part of Catholic Education Northern Territory, a system comprising 18 Catholic schools. OLSHT’s enrolment fluctuates between 550 to 650 and operates from Transition to Year Twelve. It also has a Pre-school and a Families as First Teachers program.
The right person?
Dr John Young leaves after having been principal of OLSHT for 10 years. He arrived thinking the standard 4-year contract would be ideal. He was surprised at the level of welcome given to him and quickly became attached to the Wadeye community. As he now reflects on his 10 years of leadership, John said the opportunity to provide a real difference to his community is something he will always treasure. Would a similar contribution be a highlight in your career and life?
