Bishop-elect Greg Bennet (ACBC)

Bishop-Elect Bennet’s ordination was scheduled for October 20 at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sale.

In a statement yesterday, diocesan administrator Fr Peter Slater announced the ordination had to be postponed following the announcement of the Victorian Government’s “steps” to reopening the state. Regional Victoria moved to Step 3 yesterday, but under this step, public religious worship within the cathedral and other settings (with special exemption for restricted funerals) are banned until at least November 23.

“The Diocese of Sale wishes to support the state Government in its efforts to ensure the health and safety of all Victorians. We are mindful of the many other important occasions which people have delayed or have been unable to celebrate,” Fr Slater said.

He said the diocese would adhere to any restrictions once the ordination ceremony is allowed to occur.
