Victoria to mobilise thousands of tutors

Victorian Education Minister James Merlino expects 80 per cent of the tutors will be women (Bigstock)

The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria has welcomed additional funding to employ tutors to support students to get back up to speed with learning, as announced by the Victorian Government yesterday.

Education Minister James Merlino yesterday announced that schools will be funded to engage one or more tutors on a part- or full-time basis, depending on the school's size and level of need, The Age reported. More than 3500 tutors will be employed at state schools and 600 at non-government schools. Mr Merlino said he expected 80 per cent of the tutors would be women, who had been most financially affected by the pandemic.

CECV executive director Jim Miles said the program was anticipated to deliver around $20 million to eligible Catholic schools to assist identified students, primarily through small group tutoring opportunities.

“This is a constructive and welcome initiative by the state government, in support of Victorian children,” Mr Miles said.

“We know there has been significant variability in how students have progressed through remote learning, often tied to disadvantage and other challenging family circumstances.

“With the return to school of years Prep to 7, 11 and 12 this week, our teachers are already working to monitor and assess students and put in place extra support for those who may have fallen behind.

“This funding will now provide further resources from Term 1 next year to support our teachers and build on this vital work.”

Mr Miles said opportunities for interested teachers to tutor in the Catholic education sector would be promoted in the coming weeks.
