Indian priest dies day after granddaughter's wedding

An Indian priest who was ordained at 70 with special Holy See permission following his wife's death, and whose eldest son was also a priest, has died one day after blessing the marriage of his granddaughter.

UCA News reports that Fr Kanjooparambil Chacko became a priest after his wife, Thankamma, died and their four sons and five daughters were settled. The widower had to receive special permission from the Vatican to become a priest.

Joychan Chacko, his eldest son, said his father turned to spiritual matters after another son, Salesian Father Philip Chacko, died in a road accident in 1986. Their mother died three years later.

Fr Philip Nelpuraparampil of Changanacherry archdiocese told UCA News that soon after Thankamma's death, her husband approached Archbishop Powathil with "an unusual request" - permission to join a seminary.

Former local Archbishop Joseph Powathil, who retired two days before the priest's death, obtained Vatican permission as the elderly man had settled his children, continued the priest, who worked as secretary to the now-retired archbishop.

The widower joined the Salesian congregation and Archbishop Powathil ordained him a priest at the age of 70. According to Fr Nelpuraparampil, Fr Chacko was a priest with a "rare commitment in serving the Church."
